About the Work |
Although my work is not strictly derived from traditional cultures, I tend to draw from those sources to achieve human expression using the vessel form. As I am also strongly influenced by geologic phenomena in nature, it is important to me to call attention to the material of clay itself. I try to utilize the natural expressive tendencies of clay and the controlled unpredictability of fire. I believe containment of space and the natural qualities of clay within the vessel form have metaphorical strength, which has been apparent for millennia, and continues even now to be a source of mystery and solace. Making vessels is part of my daily life.
The clay is wetted and polished before being fired in a pit with wood. Color is derived from iron, salt, copper, smoke, and clay.
